Staying in Positano vs Sorrento?

I am headed to Italy in two weeks and had initially booked a night in Sorrento as it has an easy route back to Naples (we are taking the 1:50pm train to Rome). However, I would much rather stay in Positano for the night if it is just as easy to get to the Naples train station? Thoughts?

If you are going to only spend one night, then stay in Positano. Take your time exploring this town. No use in staying in Sorrento and then spending your very short time traveling back and forth. In a worse case scenario and the buses aren't running (strike), you can always hire a private car to take you to the Naples train station. It's a shame that you are only staying one night on the Amalfi Peninsula.

I'm staying for 3 nights in Capri and visiting some of the other towns.....just trying to decide if Positano or Sorrento has easier/fewest travel options back to Naples.....

Hi Mindy - from my experience, getting from Positano to Sorrento simply involves catching the bus, and the trip takes about an hour and a half. The bus can take you right to the station hub in Sorrento, where you would hop the Circumvesuviana to Naples. You would need a bus ticket and a separate train ticket. So I guess a lot depends on how early you want to get up :-) how much luggage you have, and how often the buses run. If I were you, I'd stay in Positano and enjoy the last ride up the Amalfi Coast. It's worth the extra hour and half morning commute.

We've stayed in Sorrento a few times; its a great base for exploring the region and is a nice town in its own right. The evening passegiata is fun, and there are many good restaurants. So it if was my it would be Sorrento. But if you prefer Positano, that's where you should stay.

If you're looking for easier/less hassel then you're best best is Sorrento. Even if there is a boat that takes you directly from Positano to Naples, you would still have to get from the docks to the train station. Might be best to just stick with the Sorrento plans.

Mindy, Sorrento undoubtedly has the easiest and best transportation options back to Naples, but it is NOT "just as easy" to get to the Naples train station from Positano. Given the fact that you have a "set time" for the train to Rome, I'd probably opt for Sorrento and the Circumvesuviana, as any unexpected delays in travelling from Positano may cause you to miss the 13:50 train. If you're set on staying in Positano it IS possible, but the travel times will reduce your time there slightly. Happy travels!

Thanks for all the insight everyone, looks like I'll keep our current plans to stay in Sorrento and just day-trip to Positano :-)
