Staying in Positano

Has anyone stayed in Positano? We are planning a trip to Itay next year with some friends and my wife saw Positano in the movie 'Under a Tuscan Sun' and wants to stay there for a few days. Just looking for some help if possible.
Thanks

I would not "stay" in Positano. I spent three months in Sorrento as a base to do Amalfi area, east coast Italy, and Sicily. Sorrento gives you access to trains and buses. I took the bus several times to visit Positano which is quite lovely; however, from Positano to go anywhere, you must use bus, boat, or car. I prefer the train to do Naples, Pompeii, etc. From Positano, there is no train. It is strictly car, bus, or boat. I guess if you are doing the car bit, it is fine. Otherwise, you are stuck and limited. Besides that, Sorrento offers more value in hotels, sights, etc. I found Sorrento much more friendly!

Just to give you the opposite view, I preferred Positano to Sorrento. I've been to Sorrento twice on prior trips and stayed in Positano for the first time last year on the Rick Steves southern Italy tour. We stayed at the Hotel Savoia and it was a nice place.

It is true that there are better transportation connection options in Sorrento. I think it depends on whether you are just looking for a place to relax or if you want to take day trips. Sorrento is a better choice for Pompeii or Naples since the train is there. If you just want to relax, I'd choose Positano. You can take the bus along the Amalfi coast from Positano and depending on time of year, boats to Capri or along the coast.

I've stayed in both Positano and Sorrento. Positano is great if you want to relax and limit your trips - e.g. bus/boat to Amalfi or boat to Capri. If you want more options - e.g. Pompeii and Naples - then Sorrento would be a better option. I too stayed at Hotel Savoia in Positano and thought it was very nice.

Defintely stay in Positano. It's a beautiful town. Two options to suggest: the budget Pensione Maria Luisa or the mid priced Hotel Pupetto, on its own beach a five minute walk from the central Positano beach. You can find both on the web.

Positano it must be if your wife saw it in the film. A place people from Leominster must see. (I'm originally from Lowell) .
Having breakfast on the terrace and smelling the bougainville and gelsomino, the colors, the fashion,,,and the stairs (I hope your knees are young). For other romantic hideaways check www.elegantetruria.com
