We will be taking a cruise in July that departs/returns from Rome (Civitavecchia). Since we have been to Rome before, I was just wondering what Civitavecchia is like. Is it somewhere that would be nice for a night? Or somewhere nearby? Any hotel suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Stay in Rome in a different neighborhood from where you stayed before.
No.

There have been similar discussion this year, if you want more opinions. Search box top left.
Edit: Note that it appears that large ships may have a different experience today at Civitavecchia than the three small-ship departure/arrivals we had there over several years. There is (apparently) a big, boxy terminal for big ships that I have not been to. I would expect that taxis can drive right up to such a terminal's sidewalk.
We were dropped off by the port shuttle bus beside Windstar's own gangplank, let down to the pier itself, outdoors.
Having boarded four ships in Civit....., it is really nothing but a gritty port city. There is no reason to stay in Civit.... other than absolute convenience. But we would stay in Rome given how easy it is to reach the port via train from Rome.
