Staying in Napoli for 4 days, how to tour amalifi coast

My husband and I will be staying in Napoli for 4 days and we are hoping to do day trips to the Amalfi coast. Would the ferry to the different regions be the best? Bus?

Thanks!

It's about two hours from Napoli to the Amalfi Coast. You can take a bus or ferry from Sorrento. I would take the bus down the coast (sit on the right side), and take the ferry back. If you want to stop in the coastal towns, you need separate tickets for either bus or ferry, as far as I know ther is no hop on/hop off option. But there should be!

It also matter what time of year you're going to take this trip as the ferries do not run during the colder months. Your best bet may be train to Sorrento or Salerno and either buses or ferries (if running) to points along the coast from either. If budget is no issue, you might also consider a private driver.

Many people sleeping on the Amalfi Coast don't make proper plans for their return to the Naples (or Rome) airport for departure. The AC is annoyingly isolated, for a place that is so crowded with tourists. If you have a strong interest in the AC, you are better off sleeping overnight than schlepping there twice. We settled for 8 hours with a car and driver from our Sorrento hotel. That was enough for us. Don't forget Caserta in your planning. If I were staying in Naples, I'd visit Cumae before Positano-I mean, how many International-chain boutiques that you can't afford to buy in do you need to see? (Opinion)

Tim, loved your opinion post, but one person's "annoyingly isolated" is another's paradise (me).

shabbykelly, Tim is right, if you really want the Amalfi Coast, spend a couple of nights there. I like Praiano and lately Minori.

I took a day trip from Naples to Sorrento and Positano. I consider it largely a waste of a day. The point of the Amalfi coast is settling in and enjoying it, not blitzing through. So, I agree with the others - if you want to see the area, spend a few nights there.

Or at least stay in Sorrento, where you can take the bus to coastal towns AND get a direct bus to Naples airport or a train to Naples. (I love Sorrento!)
