Is it possible or desirable to stay in Naples and do day trips to Positano and Pompeii?
Does anyone have recommendations where to stay?
We are planning 2 1/2 days in this region.
Thanks!

Most people don't seem to think it is desirable...but I chose the Best Western Hotel Plaza near the Central Station for a visit next month. Close enough to the transportaion but not right on Garibaldi, and the reviews and price seemed fair
I saw the Best Western on tripadvisor.com. It looks like it is convenient and has a beautiful view! Close to trains and such...
Are you planning on touring around the region?
With 2 1/2 days, and the desire to go to Positano, I'd base in Sorrento, not Naples. Both Pompeii and Positano are easily reached from Sorrento.
this comes up very frequently; use the search box at the top right to find earlier threads.
Hi Sarah, If you scroll down to page 2 (at this moment, might be page 3 by the time you read this) there is a thread titled "Naples for 3 Nights...Where to Stay" which might be helpful to you.
Hi Sarah,
I would recommend Sorrento instead. It is closer to Positano and I think it's a little nicer to stay than in Naples.
My husband and I stayed at Ulisse Deluxe Hostel (http://www.ulissedeluxe.com/index_english.htm). It is really like a 4star hotel (Rick Steves also recommends this in his Italy book). The prices are very reasonable and the place is very clean. The rooms were huge (with marble floors) and had a TV/Fridge etc. They had a breakfast Buffet that you could pay extra for. And it's in a great location.
Have a wonderful trip!
Sarah,
Enjoy your stay in Sorrento! It's a beautiful city.
A stay of 2.5 days is a fairly short time for visiting that area. Does that include travel times to & from the area?
As well as (or instead of) visiting Positano, you could also consider a day trip to Capri, which you can reach by boat from either Positano or Sorrento (as well as Naples).
Happy travels!
We just booked at the Ulisse!! Thanks for all the advice. I think we will be much happier in Sorrento... now off to plan our train travels.
Thanks you!
Sarah
If you are planning on being out and about all the time it may not matter. Pompeii is about midway between Sorrento and Naples, Positano can be easier to get to from Sorrento. We like some down time at the end of our day and for us Sorrento is more relaxing than Naples so we would opt to stay in Sorrento. Naples tends to keep us on edge with its hustle and bustle. If you don't want the extra hour or so of travel with luggage each way from Napoli to Sorrento, then Naples is probably just fine. If you decide to stay in Naples, a trip to Sorrento for a few hours is worthwhile.
Just back from there. Stay in sorrento and day trip to those locations. We stayed at Hotel Sorrento City , just a few blocks from train and bus station and day tripped to all locations with ease. Sorrento is beautiful and relaxing and safe.
Go early(first train) to Pompeii
Enjoy-you will love it

Since you are so close by train, I suggest seeing Herculaneum on the same day that you visit Pompeii. It is very small and better preserved. Also, since you will be in that area, read the book "Pompeii," I think the author's name is Robert Harris. It is about the eruption and is told through the voice of the Aquarius, or engineer for the aquaducts who is sent to Pompeii to find out why the aquaducts are drying up. A good thing to watch before you go is the Discovery channel program on Pompeii. I think you might be able to rent it through netflicks, but if not, it is not that expensive to purchase and it would enrich the experience when you go to Pompeii. And, if you can engage Gaetano Manfredi as a guide to Pompeii do it. He is a fantastic guide.
