Staying in Lucca 3 nights - want to visit a few wineries in the afternoons

First time to Italy, Europe for that matter, and we are travelling around northern Italy for 3 weeks late June/ early July. We are staying 3 nights in Lucca and planned to visit wineries around Tuscany area in the afternoons. We are planning to rent a car for a few days to do this.

Any suggestions on wineries to visit? I know next to nothing about wine, more looking for interesting places to visit and enjoy some wine.

Thanks for any advice!

I would suggest going to Bolgheri. It is a beautiful small town one hour southwest of Lucca. It is full of wine shops. The surrounding countryside is lovely and dotted with many wineries. It is the less obvious wine region in Tuscany. You could explore the coast a bit and there are many Etruscan sites to visit close by.

Mary,
Lucca is one of my favorite towns in Italy. Where ever you are staying while there, the hotel/inn should have a list of nearby wineries and some even have people that will take you there for a charge....i.e. driver and tour guide for the day.
