Bob, I was just in Florence 2 weeks ago and stayed at Hotel Davanzati. We had a fabulous time and I would stay there again. It is about 3 blocks from the bustle of the train station and very close to the old town square, the bridge, and the duomo. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the front desk staff spoke very good English. The rooms were large and comfortable and the buffet breakfast in the morning had a lot of variety. http://www.hoteldavanzati.it/

If you're able to handle (a lot of) stairs, and aren't agrophobic, I'd suggest climbing to the top of Brunelli's dome!

Hi Bob Ive been researching hotels in Florence for a trip next year so I cant speak from personal experience, but I have booked a room at Hotel City which was very reasonable by Florence standards. Its location is close(but not too close) to train station. Check out reviews on booking.com Mike

Hi Bob,
You didn't say when, but... Both Rick Steves and a good friend of mine strongly recommended Casa Rabatti (a B&B without the breakfast). Marcella responded quickly to all of my emails and helped me with reservations to the Uffizi and the Accademia. I'll be staying there in two weeks, so if you're not going til after that, I'll follow up with a first hand report.

Last week stayed at the Hotel Delle Tele real near the train station and in the middle of everything, including good, cheap, wonderful food. Has an elevator and continental breakfast. Triple room was 120 a night.

Last September we stayed at Hotel Il Bargellino. It is within walking distance of the train station and an easy walk to probably anywhere you would be going. We paid 85 euros per night. It is run by an American named Carmel and her Italian husband. We were very satisfied with our stay there.
