Going to Bolzano for a week with a group of friends for a week in October. We have not visited the area before so we were wondering where to travel for a day and some fun things to do in the area. We are going to to do the usual, museums and spending some time in Bolzano. I should mention we are staying in the mountains at a spa resort. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't miss the museum housing Otzi and the lovely historic center of the city.
North of Bolzano you have the smaller toen of Bressanone/Btixen, which has a pretty historic district.
South of Bolzano is Verona.
I liked the mountain village of Ortisei.

You can take the bus to the Val Gardena and go hiking. It’s a 45 minute ride. The Val Gardena is stunning.

Ötzi museum was closed the day we were in Bolzano, so be sure to check the museum schedule. Bolzano is a lovely town.

The Renon/Ritten plateau above Bolzano is reachable via a dramatic lift and there is a little cog railway up there and numerous hiking trails and small villages.
