Has anyone stayed at a monastary or convent in Rome? Any recommendations?
We've stayed in monasteries and convents all over italy. Here are a few Rome options!
FANTASTIC list Ron! We've stayed with the Sisters of the Pallotine and would definitely stay there again. It's located very close to the Vatican (and they have tickets for the Papal audience), and are close to one of the main buslines that serves the various tourist sites. Do keep in mind that the accomodations are quite "utilitarian' and oftimes twin beds are the norm, and the curfew time isn't a "suggestion" but usually hard and fast and some even lock the doors for the night. Also, depending on the time of year you should keep in mind that most convents have no airconditioning (though in fairness quite a few hotels that claim to have ac seem to have dozens of excuses why it isn't working. On the upside, the cleanliness really is next to Godliness LOL and the nuns are sweet and friendly hostesses. The breakfast at Pallotine was very simple, fresh baked bread, butter, jams, coffee milk tea and juice. They have a nice lounge on the first floor, which I THINK was airconditioned and has a comunal fridge for storing cold drinks and snacks. It really depends on your travel style. Our lodgings are basically a place to store our stuff, clean up and sleep. Clean and well located are high on our list, plasma tv and wifi not even on it LOL.
yes i stayed at the convent RS recommended a few years ago. it's a couple of blocks from the colosio on a back street. pretty quite, small bed, not so great breakfast. The location is pretty good, and the price is great for Rome. need to be back on time, but if you don't party out very late, it's an ok choice for budget traveller.
