We are flying in on Saturday night at 8 and plan to leave Sunday morning by train to La Spezia. Should we stay near the airport and take the train from there, or should we take the train to Termini and stay somewhere around there?
There is very little to see or do around the airport except to listen to jets flying overhead. Take the train and stay near Termini -- far more interesting and enjoyable. Beside you will have to take train to Termini anyway.
Frank is so right! Stay near Termini and have a nice dinner in Rome, much better than staying near the airport.
The other option is to take the train to the rome termini station and then take another one out to civitavecchia. It looks like all trains go through there anyway. If you take the leonardo express to termini it'll take a half hour. From there to Civitavecchia it's about 40 minutes.
If not, I agree with the others that you should stay in Rome near the termini instead of out at the airport.

Stay near Termini, you can take a walk, have dinner or a drink, and walk back to your hotel. next morning you walk to the train station. If you just pull out 1 change of clothes it will be easy.
Thanks everybody! Now how about recommendations on hotel and restaurant?
Now that your question has changed, you'll probably get better results starting a new topic. Just a suggestion.
I am not following why she would want to go to Civit.... There is absolutely nothing around the Civit,, train station. In someways Civit.. is less exciting than the airport.
