Stay in Venice or outside of Venice

Traveling for my honeymoon. Would you stay in Venice or outside of Venice? We are only there for 2 nights. Is the savings worth it or would we ended up spending what we save on train tickets into Venice?

Stay IN Venice. With only 2 nights you do not want to waste time 'commuting'

We will be in Venice in Sept as well, and debated on the same thing. As everyone else has said, stay IN Venice. You will spend too much time commuting, and as a previous poster stated, you only live once.

Check into apartment rentals, such as AirBnB, as we did. We are staying in the Cannaregio district in an adorable apt......cheaper than a hotel, for sure!

Stay in Venice, it’s the romantic ambience and your honeymoon! What are your dates and budget in euros? After your honeymoon you’ll have to come back with a report.

Been to Venice many times and the first time was really a let down and a pain in the butt because we stayed in Mestre. We actually didn't know any better, we thought "Venice is Venice". Now we know Venice is NOT Mestre!

Don't even think about it.

By all means stay in Venice. The first time we went we stayed in Dosoduro and got out bright and early every morning. There is little in this world as atmospheric as the streets of Venice when they are practically deserted and shrouded in a light morning fog. Piazza San Marco was ours alone but for one other couple and a ballerina having photos taken. The evening, after the hordes of day trippers has gone, is also a nearly magical time. If I couldn’t have these hours in Venice, I simply wouldn’t go.

Another vote for IN Venice.

When we were in Venice, we stayed at the most wonderful little hotel on a quiet canal, less than a 5-minute walk to St. Mark's, we had a small French balcony that overlooked the little canal, and a full-length window that overlooked the other approach of the canal that also had doors that opened.............now about two years later, my husband still smiles every time the photo from that little balcony comes up on his screen saver.

He so enjoyed watching Venice wake up, the men prepping their gondolas, the UPS boat, the laundry boat, all quietly doing their morning thing. THAT is what staying on a quiet canal in Venice is all about. As the morning hours quickly progressed, we could see people crossing the bridges, but since we were off the beaten path, it was never noisy and there was no people crush (as we saw on the main canal).

The hotel also had a private courtyard (with an inside option) where it served the included breakfast and afternoon tea/snacks. One night we also brought to-go meals back to the hotel (we were too exhausted to stay up to dine late), which we enjoyed in the little courtyard with complimentary adult beverages from our mini-fridge in the room. All this, and a fabulous staff at the hotel, deluxe larger room, for under $300 a night (maybe even less depending on when you go), including taxes. The only negative was that the bathroom shower was a little small, but we would stay in the exact same location, exact same room, if we were to return to Venice. My husband kept telling me I hit a homerun with that choice.

Hotel Le Isole...... I've including a link to their reviews on Trip Advisor, which also includes photos. We particularly liked the room in the front that overlooked the small canal...just describe it to them, and they will know the room.

Venice - what a fabulous place for a honeymoon. Decades ago we headed to Gatlinburg in our little red Pinto, price-shopping hotels at 11:00 pm, to find one we could afford. We've been blessed that we have been able to upgrade the way we travel over the decades.

Be sure to follow Rick Steves' advice in the guidebook and take the Vaparetto on the big loop of the Grand Canal...it's cheap. Sit in seats in front of the wheelhouse, so you have fabulous view. If one vaparetto does not have those seats (by design of the boat), just wait for the next one, and it likely will and then you can also be among the first boarding to grab those seats. We did it late in the afternoon, but if we were to go to Venice again, we would likely do it during the day, then a second time at night. One really sees the beauty of Venice on that vaparetto loop.

I wish you a long happy marriage and a lifetime of happiness. Above all, take care of each other, have disagreements (they can be healthy), forgive imperfections (we all have them), and realize often the qualities that attracted you to your spouse are sometimes the very characteristics that will drive you nuts about him/her.....just remember you LOVED those characteristics and they likely compliments yours. Grow in the same direction together. Hopefully the two of you have traveled internationally before....I always advice that BEFORE getting married.....because those long flights and the stress of time-zone changes can bring out grumpiness......remember we are all human; forgiveness and kindness in extra doses.

Edit/addition: If you are flying into Venice for your arrival, be sure to take a water taxi to your hotel.....it is a fabulous way to arrive. If the private water taxi is too expensive for your budget, you can arrange a shared water taxi at the booth in the airport and it is super inexpensive. My husband LOVED the shared water taxi ride....simply loved it!!! The smile on his face is one I will never forget!!

IN!!

When I went to Venice as a young traveler on a tight budget I stayed outside the city. And Venice came across as a crowded, unpleasant mess. Staying in the city means you can go to your hotel to rest in the heat/crowds of the day. You can wander nearly empty streets very early or in the evening. You can go back to the hotel to get dressed for dinner and go somewhere special. You can take a walk and see the fish market early then return to the hotel for breakfast. Etc etc etc. Venice is best when the crowds go back to the mainland/cruise ship. If you are part of that crowd then you will miss the best part.

It is your honeymoon and a once in a lifetime experience. Stay in Venice. Most accommodations provide you with quite a hearty breakfast and Venice is a walking city - you can always go back to the hotel in Venice to rest your feet before you explore the city some more.

I would also suggest to stay an extra night, if you have one to spare. Maybe you can borrow it from somewhere else from the rest of the trip.

Words that I'm guessing have never been spoken...

"Mestre was such a romantic place for our honeymoon!"

We stayed at Hotel Serenissima on our RS Village Italy Tour. Right in the center of where you want to be.

Check out their website and I would book directly with them to avoid any extras charged with booking engines. here is website:

It is just a couple minutes walk to Piazza San Marco. Their prices look just about average for "in Venice"

Congrats on your Wedding and Honeymoon.

15-0 for IN

Any questions or doubt about it now?

Time to invoke the 'mercy rule' like in little kids baseball when the score is hopelessly lopsided?

IN!!!

I stayed in Mestre, not having a choice since we bought a package tour, and swore the next time I go I will stay in Venice to enjoy the peace and quiet when daytrippers leave.

I know plenty of people who stayed IN and were happy. We stayed OUT and were equally happy. (I honestly wasn't a huge fan of Venice and more enjoyed our time outside of town.) We stayed in Treviso and took the train in. Honestly, the hotel breakfast there was the best breakfast of my life!

We had a car and drove up to a little place called Ai Pioppi. It's a homemade amusement park outside a restaurant north of Treviso. It was honestly one of the happiest nights of my life. I think it all depends on who you are, what you want out of your trip and your likes and dislikes.

Have a great honeymoon!

Stay in Venice. St. Mark Square is magical after dark when sitting at a cafe and listening to the cafe musical groups. We've stayed in several areas and hotels on the island and none were too remote for an early morning or evening stroll. We once stayed at Hotel Casanova that might be a budget idea for a honeymoon hotel. We've also stayed at the more elegant hotel Palace Bonvecchiati which would be a nice honeymoon hotel.
