Stay in Vatican Museum after tour?

If you are ending in the museum, there's no reason you can't stay (although many tours start in the museums and end in St Peter's). Unless things have changed, I don't believe you can leave and reenter.

If you are on a tour that includes the basilica you won't be able to re-enter the museums. Once you exit the museums you can only re-enter by buying another entry ticket. If your tour doesn't include the basilica you can use the regular path to the exit but then, before going outside, just re-enter the museums. You don't need to go against the flow of traffic you simply start over again at the beginning. Donna

Thanks. Our tour is only for the museum that day so I will just plan to cruise back into the museum from the Sistine Chapel.
