We will be going on our Honeymoon in August 2012. Flying into Pisa--we land at 12pm, want to see the sights, then stay a night before we head to Monterosso the next day. Any suggestions as to the best place to stay? I was thinking either Pisa, or take a train to Lucca, but I am open to other suggestions. Thanks!
Congrats! If you want to see the Leaning Tower, do it after you leave the airport. It's worth about an hour, two at the most. Then head to Lucca. You'll want to keep moving on Day 1 to ward off jet lag. In Lucca you can ride bikes around the wall and just mosey around town. We did a one night stay there on our way from Florence to Vernazza. I could have stayed longer. We stayed at Hotel Rex. It is next to the train station (no train noise) and just outside the wall. They have bikes you can use. It was nice to not have to schlep our bags far, but be only a few minutes walk from the old town. August is just around the corner and is prime tourist season. You should make your reservation for wherever you decide ASAP!
Lucca is charming;Pisa is not. See the bell tower and the baptistery and then move on to Lucca. Pisa could ruin an otherwise grand honeymoon!
Ditto Peggy. There's really nothing to see in Pisa aside from the tower and the adjoining Field of Miracles. Lucca is much more scenic. If you are a beach person, you might check out Via Reggio which is near Pisa.
Are you thinking about spending only 1 night in Lucca and then going on to Monterosso? They are only about 1 hour apart.
Pisa was a disappointment for us, if you go see the "Field of Miracles"(you'll see the baptistery and the tower there), and then move on to Lucca. Lucca is beautiful! rent a bike and ride the ramparts, and stroll through the town. We actually caught a James Taylor concert there in 2009!
Lucca is charming and well worth a honeymoon night. From there to Monterosso is more like 2 hours unless you get the one connection that is an hour and twenty minutes.
