My wife and I are scheduled for the RS Village Italy tour in September. We bought tickets to arrive a couple days early to stay in Venise and stay a couple of days later in Milan at the end. Can anyone recommend a hotel in Milan old town? What is the neighborhood around the Cadorna train station like? That would be convenient for getting to the airport the last morning.
We liked Hotel Duca di York

We've stayed at two hotels in Milan last September and I would recommend them both. The first, Palazzo Segreti, is a boutique hotel located between the Milan Cathedral and the Sforzesco Castle and easily walkable (a few blocks) to both along with plenty of shops, restaurants, and cafes. Great location, lovely breakfast in the morning, bar to grab a glass of wine after dinner, comfortable beds, and spacious rooms.
The second was the Unique Hotel which was a few blocks past Palazzo Segreti. We actually liked this one a bit better because we were right outside the tourist attractions so they were easy to get to but less crowds. Again, we're talking blocks so still quite convenient. The rooms were a bit smaller but very comfortable, the breakfast was great, and the staff was amazing and constantly exceeded our expectations.
I would not recommend staying near the train station. It is a quick Uber ride.
Have fun on your tour!!
The area around Cadorna station is convenient to walk to sites such as the Last Supper and the Duomo. I stayed near Cardorna for 2 nights and found it comfortable to walk around alone in the evening. According to google maps, Palazzo Segreti, mentioned by another post, is an 11 minute walk from Cadorna station.
Please note that Milan Centrale is a different station further from the Duomo and an area some people feel is less desireable in the evening (though I stayed one night near there and it was fine). The Malpensa express train runs two separate lines; one from Cardorna and a different line from Milan Centrale.
The trains from Cadorna are quicker to Malpensa than the trains from Centrale. 37 minutes vs 51 minutes. Trains also leave earlier, starting like 4:27 am.
Coming from Orta-Miasino, you have to change stations in Novara from the Trenitalia station to the Trenord station, about 200 yds away. Trains from that station go to Cadorna.
Another vote for Hotel Gran Duca di York. We have stayed there previously and it’s our splurge after a long trip. Wonderful property and very quiet location. Great staff! Close to everything in the center of Milan.
Thanks for all the responses. They were helpful. We are booked at the Gran Duca di York, a 12 minute walk from the Cadorna station and 9 minutes from the duomo.
I should have added we just completed the Village Italy tour last Sunday. Our guide had compiled departure information for all on the tour. We ended up being part of a group of 8 going into Milan and not an airport. Our van dropped us at our hotel and the charge was 30€ per person cash which our guide had collected and paid the driver. Very convenient.
