We are planning a trip to Italy in September and have heard that it is possible to stay in convents as an alternative to a hotel. Does anyone know anything about this topic?
I have not had the experience. You can type the word "convent" in the search bar at the top of the RS website and view close to 1000 forum mentions - not all will be on topic, but many appear to be.
Check to see if there is a curfew you book.

Casa di Santa Brigida, Piazza Farnese in Rome, was lovely. I'd stay there again without hesitation. It's near Campo Dei Fiori.
Years ago the TI in Milan sent me to a convent. I was on a very tight budget and it was one of the most affordable options, and of course quite safe for a woman traveling alone. If you want more details let me know and I'll send you a PM on this site.
Yes! We love staying in these. Have stayed in them in Florence, Siena, and one other small town in Tuscany. Several other countries as well. Clean, inexpensive, and quirky. Always enjoyable, memorable experiences. When my 19 year old son went to Italy for two weeks last fall I booked him into several convents and he thought they were great.
Monasterystays.com is a great resource. Two I can recommend are Instituto Beata Angelina in Assisi ( next to the St. Francis church ) and Casa Maria Immacolata in Rome ( not far from Vatican and convenient to Metro
We are going in June and had a family recommendation to a particular convent. However, they had a 11 pm curfew. Sorry, but if I'm having fun in Rome, I don’t intend on being in by 11. It sounds like a great place to stay. But, read carefully.
We stayed at a wonderful former monastery now a hotel outside Orvieto called La Badia
They are inexpensive, clean, no frills and I love staying in them. My favorite is in Lucca. Let me know if you are going there and need a recommendation. Have stayed in convents and monasteries. The website that someone provided is a great resource.
I discovered that Monasterystays site has much information. if you book through them you are paying a higher fee than if you book directly through the sisters. Most of the convents I stayed in have curfews, while most of the monasteries just give you a key and tell you to come in quietly. Because Italy is a Catholic country, the religious houses are well located, many city center. Most provide a breakfast with your stay.
Alma Domus in Siena is great!!!! Room "con vista".
I've stayed in convents in Rome, Venice, and Matera.
I loved it. In two of them the sisters were so sweet.
The curfews didn't both me since I was traveling alone and not staying out late anyway.
I've been told that if you want to come in later because of a cultural event such as opera or symphony they can make that work for you.
I would do it again in a heartbeat.
