Starting to Plan - Very Early Stages

Just bought our tickets, arriving into Milan on 11/18 at 11:55 am. Will have 8 nights on the ground with flight home leaving Milan 2:40 pm which will give us some time to get back to Milan. Was in Italy in 2015 and did Milan, Flornce, Lucca, Rome, Orvieto, Sorrento and Amalifi Coast and comfortable using the trains to get around. We are two adults with a 15 year old son.

Would like to see Venice and definitely the Lamborghini museum in Bologna. Would like to see Parma and Modena. Maybe a side trip to Trento or Bolzano..Maybe take a cable car ride up and see some view of the Dolomites. Besides that, open to some suggestions. Are we better off using a town as Verona as a base a doing day trips? Thinking we should set aside 2 nights in Venice.

Could use some suggestions and how to arrange.

Thanks!

I see you took advantage of the great fares on Emirates! We are planning a similar trip in October (10 days) and will be flying into and out of Milan. We are considering basing in Bologna for 4-5 nights and do day trips to Modena and Ravenna. We have been to Venice twice in the last 4 years but I wouldn't rule out a return visit! We are also going to spend some time at Lake Como (probably go to Lugano on a day trip) and wrap up the trip in Milan. I'll be following this thread for more advice!

With only 8 nights on the ground, you need to scale down your ambitions.
Assuming you go straight to Venice upon landing, you should spend 3 nights there.
Bologna can be used as a base for Bologna (Lamborghini is nearby), Modena and even Parma. For all of that you might need 3 nights in Bologna. You gave two nights left, but you can't stay too far from Malpensa airport as you need to be there around noon for your early afternoon flight home.
You might even consider two nights in Verona either before Venice or before heading back to Milan.

Ravenna is a good daytrip from Bologna, or for spending a night.

Yes, scale down your destinations. 6 sites in 8 days is way too much. Each time you change locations you lose a half day. I would suggest two or three places at most. When you land, head straight to Venice. Leave your last night back in Milan.
