Starting Italy vacation in Cinque Terre, what airport?

Coming from USA, starting our Italy trip in Cinque Terre. Going through Genoa, will have to have 2 stops from where we live in USA. 2nd stop probably Munich, then a relatively short train to Cinque Terre. OR go through Milan which is only 1 stop by plane, but a longer train ride. Has anybody started their Italy vacation in Cinque Terre, and if so, what airport did you fly into? Anybody have a layover in Munich?

What is your home airport? Can you fly from your home airport directly to a European hub?
The only airports in central and northern Italy which have direct flights to the US are Rome, Milan and Venice. Milan is the closest to the Cinque Terre of the three.

Pisa, Genoa are the absolute closest, but neither one has flights to North America, you would need to fly through a European gateway. From Munich there are flights to Pisa also, as well to London Heathrow.

Florence is also relatively close to Cinque Terre, but also with European flights only, although it has more flights with traditional airlines than Pisa (Pisa has more flights but mostly European Low Cost like Ryanair and EasyJet).

I’ve flown through Munich many times (to/from Florence) and I think it is the most efficient airport to make a connection in Europe.
