Start Trip in Lake Garda or Venice First .. How many days?

Hi,

We are planning a family trip to Italy next year in June for 15 nights. We have flights booked flying into Vencie and then out of Naples. We are bringing our 9 and 11 year old and want to mix city and lake/beach areas. We are flying in from West coast of US. Right now we plan on the following itinerary:

Venice (3 nights) train to Lake Garda, stay in Bardolino for 4 nights, train to Rome (3 nights), train to Naples (see Pompeii in transit) then ferry to Ischia (4 nights) and then back to Naples for 1 night and fly out ...

We were thinking maybe going directly to Lake Garda when we land so kids can get acclaimated by the lake as opposed to starting in Venice with walking tours the next morning after flight etc .... or should we just start in Venice for 3 nights and then train to Lake Garda? We land at 2:30pm in Venice.

Thanks for any advise!

Your first day is lost due to travel and jetlag. Personally, I would go to Lake Garda upon arrival. It may cost a bit, but maybe hire a private car and driver to pick you up at Marco Polo airport Venice and drive you to Bardolino That's actually what we did. Slept in the car on the way. This will give you 3 full days for Lake Garda. And 2.5 days for Venice as you will lose half a day traveling form Lake Garda to Venice. Bardolino was wonderful. Plenty of restaurants and shops. Good ferry connections as well. We walked from Lazise to Bardolino along the lake. It's about 3 miles. Many people rode bikes.

Sounds good. That’s what I felt. We will have a lazy day exploring the lake first day (and some pool time) … Taking them to Gardaland on Day 3 so they’ll be rested.

Thx!
