St Peters timing?

My boyfriend and I are a few weeks away from our first international trip to Italy. We decided not to book a tour of the Vatican museums for this trip since we prioritized the Collosseum underground tour & Tours by Roberto for our larger tour (and time) expenses. However, we would still like to visit St Peter's basilica. We have free time during our last 2 days in Rome to fit it in so we're wondering what the best time to visit is without spending too much time in long lines. Would after 4pm on a Friday or Saturday be less crowded?

I would go first thing in the morning. If you get there early, before opening time, you will beat the lines.
