St. Peters or the Museums

My wife and I will be in Rome twice in May - once for 3 days, once for 2 days. For the 2nd leg, we'd like to stay near the Vatican (we're staying in the Termini for the 1st). Would you recommend that we stay at a place near St. Peters or the Vatican Museums?

They're close enough together that it won't make a tremendous amount of difference one way or the other. Our RS tour group stayed at the Hotel Alimandi which is essentially across the street and up a flight of stairs to get to the Vatican Museum entrance. Very nice hotel with an excellent breakfast, but a little on the higher end of the budget.

I found the area to be quite walkable, with a number of little cafes and shops. There is also a huge food market there during the day. I felt like the shopping/dining options were a bit more upscale closer to St. Peter's (around the Ottaviano metro stop) than the Vatican Museum's metro stop area.

Brian - good idea to stay near the Vatican. How does the neighborhood compare to Trastevere?

Liz- Good, detailed info. There hasn't been a lot of talk about the specifics of this neighborhood.

Thanks!

We stayed at the Hotel Alimandi a few years ago and yes it is at the high end and was over our budget but it was the best thing we did for our Rome visit. They will make reservations for you. They are just across the street from St Peters. When you have breakfast on their roof garden you can almost touch the Dome. The breakfast was awesome.

Either will be fine. If you stay closer to the museums entrance you will be closer to the metro.
