In the RS Rome book there is mention of a free tour of St. Peters Basilica - has anyone done this? How do you sign up? Is there a long line to wait in? Id like to get advance entry tickets to the Vatican Museum and try and time it with the tour, though dont feel I have enough details about the tour and how to get into it to do so.

Just don't plan it for your last day in Rome. Sometimes the entire basilica is closed for "private" events, without any advance notice. This happened to us in 2008.
Keep yourself time for a second chance...
