On a tour of the Vatican (museum, Sistine Chapel, etc.) we exited from St. Peter's into the large piazza. This trip we would like to be able to spend more time in St. Peter's (go to the dome, etc.). Can we enter the church from the piazza without waiting in the lengthy line on the other side?
Yes, you can enter the Basillica directly from St. Peter's Square... on the right side of the square (Constantine Colonnade). Here you will pass through security (X-RAY) and then head into the Basilica. There may be a long line to get in, winding through the Square, but it moves very quickly - as entry is free.
Once you are to the steps of the Basilica, you have a few different entry options. You can go into the Basilica directly, or you can choose alternatives (still on the same set of steps) that will take you to the Tombs (down) or the Cupola (up).
I spent one whole day, visiting the Vatican museum in the morning, then turning in to the church for the afternoon.
If you're in decent shape, you must walk up the steps to view Rome from the top of the Cupola. By the time we got up there, it was dusk and the city was covered in a soft golden hue. My favorite memory of Rome.
Thanks so much! We will definitely try to enter the Basilica from St. Peter's Square.
There was also an espresso bar on top of St Peters when I was there 4 years ago if you want to get a drink. =P
The view from the top of the dome is great.
