St. Peter's Basilica: Best Time to Experience the Rays of Sunlight?

In photographs, I'm pretty awestruck by the intense beams of light through St. Peter's. The current itinerary has us going very early in the morning, between 7 and 9 AM. I doubt that kind of light will be zipping through the interior at such an early hour... Am I wrong?

Anyway, what are the best times to get the effect of the sunlight at St. Peter's? Rick Steves says he likes to go at around 5 PM "when the church is fairly empty, sunbeams can work their magic, and the late-afternoon Mass fills the plays with spiritual music".

Surely there are other good times to go, for the sunbeams at least.

I guess it would totally depend on the time of year that you'll be there, wouldn't it? December 21 and June 21 would have two different answers.

The last time I visited St. Peter's I went at 7 a.m. and found the early morning sun was not all that great for photography -- especially from the rooftop of the cupola. I am going again in a few weeks and I am planning to spend time at St. Peter's in the late afternoon as I think the positioning of the sun will be better for photos. I look forward to hearing what others have to say.
