Does anyone know if St. Peter's basilica is open prior to the papal audience on Wednesdays? We will be there on Sept. 11 and are wondering if we can squeeze a visit into the church before the pope arrives.

I don't believe they open the church before the audience. It would be too confusing with security and all the extra people. I would visit later that afternoon. donna

It is not open that morning. They do not re-open it until after the Pope has left the Square. So usually around noon or 12:30.

I hear that it is very busy on Wednesday afternoons. I went on Thursday afternoon and didn't find it to be too bad.
