My hotel in Venice is situated near St Mark's square. How long do you think it will take me to get to Santa Maria Novella station and what is the best way? I was considering a taxi and then walking across one of the bridges to the station but I think there is also a vaporetto that goes there. Any suggestions?

You can indeed take the vaporetto to the train station. The "best" way (my opinion) is to walk to Rialto and take the #2 express vaporetto from there. The entire trip took about 20 minutes from my hotel between St. Marks Square and Campo Santa Maria Formosa. The "easiest" way (no chance of getting lost) is to take the vaporetto from the St. Marks area, but the trip may take closer to 30 minutes. Ask your hotel which stop and vaporetto are the best choice. The hotel may also list that information on their website under Directions or How to Find Us.
Shari: Do you actually mean the Venice Santa Lucia Train station? Santa Maria Novella station is in Florence.
