We'd like to enter the Basilica and then listen to Rick's audio tour as we explore inside. Entrance tickets are unavaiable on the official website for the date we want, 9/23. Any suggestions about how to get in? Do we have to buy tickets from one of the tour companies and then go with them? Thanks!

There is a separate line for people who do not have timed entry tickets. Or you can buy from one of the tour companies.

If we go in with a tour company, do we have to stay with the tour? I would like to be able to stop and look at things without feeling herded through.

If you want to take your time and not be subject to a tour guide's schedule, I'd suggest waiting in line. Sure, the line can be long, but in all the times I've been (which is more than I can count and a number in the past couple of years), I've never had to wait more than 30-45 minutes.
