St Mark's Basilica

We'd like to visit here next Summer while in Venice.

I believe there are two main areas to this Basilica: The upper level and the crypt (where the remains of St Mark are kept). Is that correct?

If so, will we need to get any sort of skip-the-line tickets to see both? Or does one ticket allow us to see both levels?
I become confused with the dearth of info regarding what places are "special access only" and which are not.

So, do we need to do a special access tour to visit the crypt? Or will "normal folk" be able to see it if we visit the Basilica on our own?

Here is the official website for St Marks. Order your tickets from here instead of a 3rd party site.

In October I got the ticket to the Basilica, Pala d’Oro and the Loggia with the museum and horses. I definitely recommend this. The horses are stunning up close and you also get close to the mosaics which are amazing.

St Mark’s crypt was closed when I was there.

I think there are 3 levels counting the Crypt. There is the ground floor basilica level then you go behind the altar on this level for the Pala d’Oro around behind then up stairs for the Museum, the horses, the terrace view. In retrospect I would try to be up on the museum level if you are there at 11:30 when they turn on the lights for the ceiling mosaics. I was downstairs and the view was good but it seemed like it would be better upstairs if someone else postsmwith a different opinion on that go with theirs as I’ve not done it both ways.

In September there was a long line for those without pre-purchased tickets to enter the basilica, but we cleared the line in 30 minutes. I suppose the wait might have been longer in July or August. It's worth it to buy an entry ticket in advance; I believe the fee is an extra 3 euros. Those advance tickets were sold out when I checked shortly before we headed to San Marco; I don't know how far in advance they typically sell out; perhaps they'd have been easy to purchase the day before. Once inside the church there are separate entry points for the Pala d'Oro and the museum, which each have a modest fee. There was very little hold-up when we paid separately for those entry fees. We didn't go to the crypt, and I don't know whether it was open at the time of our visit.

The Treasury was still closed in September. I was told that was due to close quarters, so I guess it's a holdover from the COVID spacing restrictions.

I just looked at purchasing the tickets.
The time allotment is 30 minutes. To see the mosaics lit up would you purchase 11-1130 or 1130 to 12?
Is the time allotment for all the levels or just for the main floor, do you know?
Thanks

These are all helpful comments!

Still trying to find out if a normal ticket also gets us into the crypt or not. Does anyone know?

The time span on the tickets must be for getting inside the building. You can stay inside as long as you want except that space for viewing the Pala d'Oro is very limited, so you really need to move through it relatively expeditiously unless you happen to hit that area when no one else is around--which would be unlikely.

I see no references to the crypt on the San Marco website, so I'm guessing it's not regularly accessible to visitors right now. I don't know how reliable the VenetoInside.com website is, or how recently it has been updated, but this is what it says about the crypt:

"The crypt is open to the public on only a few occasions... One of these is our evening guided tour of St. Mark's Basilica: you can access the most important religious building in Venice beyond the usual opening hours to the public and enjoy an intimate and exciting visit that also includes access to this amazing crypt!"

Link to crypt webpage: https://www.venetoinside.com/hidden-treasures/post/the-crypt-of-st-marks-basilica/

So it sounds as if you might be able to sign up for a special-access tour that includes the crypt. However, at the moment I don't see any way to buy such tickets on the VenetoInside website.

This is helpful; just trying to decide between just visiting the Basilica vs paying for an evening tour to see the Crypt.

I'm back; trying to figure out whether St. Mark's relics (yes, I know there's some dispute regarding whether or not they're actually his) are held in the crypt or the main level?

Could anyone provide any insight? I don't trust Wikipedia. :)
