I strongly suggest you buy the Rick Steves Italy or Rome 2011 book. They address all these sorts of basic questions. It will be the best money you spend on your vacation. Happy travels.

Linda, you're staying NW of Roma Termini so the easiest way to get to San Giovanni in Laterano is to ride the B line metro. Walk about 2 blocks from your hotel to the Policlinico metro station. Get on the metro, headed in the direction of Laurentina. Get off at Roma Termini Station and change to the A Line metro headed towards Anagnina, and get off a couple of stops later at the San Giovanni metro stop. You'll exit the station and walk up the hill through the walls of the old city. San Giovanni in Laterano is HUGE, you can't miss it. It will be on your left. Across the street, on your right as you head up the hill, is a small building which incorporates part of the old Lateran Palace - this is where the Scala Santa is located. The entrance is about near the red light adjacent to San Giovanni in Laterano. Scala Santa has some unique hours so don't go during lunch time. Hope that helps!

And if you get hungry there is a Coin department store just down the street with a nice, yet inexpensive, restaurant upstairs.
