St Benedict's Monastery, Subiaco

Has any one been to St Benedict's Monastery, Subiaco? I understand you need a train to Pont Mammolo (Metro B) then a bus to Subiaco then walk to the Monastery. Has any one done it? Do you know the opening hours in October? Are there taxis available for the uphill trip to the monastery? Any info on getting there would be wonderful. Thanks heaps.

Yes I've been there, and its a memorable experience. You should know that it's a brutal walk of over two kilometers to reach St. Benedict's Monastery, all uphill. Closer to town and easier to reach is the Monastery of Santa Scolastica (also highly recommended). When I was there with a friend, a local gave us a lift up the mountain, and we walked downhill back to town, stopping on the way at S. Scolastica for a visit. When I visited, years ago, I saw no taxis, but the case may be different today.

We were there in October many years ago(1998). It was a magical place. A highlight of our trip. We drove, arriving in the morning. By the time we left the parking lot had several tour busses in it. If you are coming from Rome that might be an option for an easy way to get there. Or the tour company might be able to answer your questions. The Monastery is 3km from the town of Subiaco. The town is small, but cute, with at least two hotels. If you can't find the information you need from a google search on the Momastery, I would do a search for a hotel and email them your questions.

Sue, If you haven't done so, I would also suggest posting your questions on another travel website, such as www.slowtrav.com to reach a group of people who are more likely to have ventured off the "Rick Steve's travel path" to places like Subiaco.

Thanks for the tips. I will have to get in training for the "hill Climb". I will also try www.slowtrav.com - thanks. I have looked on the web for tour but they all seem to be several days as opposed to just one day from Rome to Subiaco. I will only be in Rome one day before we want to go so it would be great to find out before we go. Cheers.
