Squero Gelato gone in Venice, what to do?

One element of our pilgrimage to Venice is always Squero Gelateria in Dorsoduro, over the small rio from the Squero, down from the Accademia. Last week we went back and the shutters were all down and looked like thay had been for a while. What happened? What to do?

We went to Nico's but, surly waiter aside, it really isn't in the same ballpark. We found Nico's watery and relatively less tasty.

Anybody got any ideas? Gelato Bar at the Bruno was, as always, pretty good; didn't find any at Didovich.

What's going on with proper artisinal gelato in La Serinessima?

Nigel there is a great wine bar next door to the Squero Gelateria. It's our favorite. Called Cantine del Vino gia Schiavi. Skip the gelateria....

Ah, Nigel, I feel your pain. We have not been to Venice at a time when gelato was important, but I cannot imagine how it feel to have your favorite place disappear.

As for what is going on perhaps they have caved in to tourist pressure and lowered standards?

Paolin. Campo Santo Stefano, San Marco

Gelateria Millevoglie, over by the Frari in San Polo

My favorite:

La Boutique del Gelato, Salizzada S. Lio 5727 , behind Piazza San Marco

In Venice, we usually go to La Boutique del Gelato, but found a new artisanal place on our last trip. It's called Michelangelo, and it's very close to the beginning of the Rialto bridge, on the San Marco side.

Also, there's a Grom, I think in San Polo. I know it's a chain, but the gelato is good and some people really love it.

Our favorite gelato in Venice in 2006 (not sure if it's still there) was a place called Doge's in Campo Santa Margarita ... a little hard to find, but we made our way back there at least once a day during our visit for amazing gelato. It's worth looking for.

I can second 'Doges' in Campo Santa Margherita. We stayed just off the campo for a month and it became our favourite gelato stop. It was still there in 2009.
