In May I will be traveling for 3 weeks in the Lazio, Umbria & Southern Tuscany region, using public transportation. I've been to Italy several times so will not be visiting some of the usual places. I prefer to stay in fewer places & take day trips around when I get tired of the town I'm in.
In avoiding Sunday travel I have 4 nights to plan before getting to my next destination. I'm trying to decide which of these two (Spoleto or Spello) hill top towns will be better to stay in & which makes a good day trip. Thank you in advance for your replies.
Spoleto is larger and the train station is more easily accessed on foot. In Spello it is a bit of a walk: 20 minutes from the main piazza at the top of the town to the station. So if you are doing day trips, it is easier from Spoleto, although Assisi is easy by bus from Spello. Both are quite charming.
I spent a week in Spoleto in July 2014 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots to see during the day and lots of nice streets for your evening passeggiata. I visited Spello by bus and train as a day trip and found one day sufficient. Spello is tiny. Spoleto is quite a bit larger. I felt safe walking around Spoleto alone in the evening.
