I will be traveling to Rome with my family in July. We would like to be able to do a beach day...and I was looking into Sprelonga. Is it possible to get there from Rome easily from Rome? Are the public beaches where we could spend the day?
Hi Tina - Was just there a few weeks ago - Rented a car in Rome and drove the 60 miles down to Sperlonga - Absolutely Beautiful !!!
Ciao, Greg
You can also get there easily by train, Roma Termini-Fondi. Then right outside the Fondi station are buses that take you to Sperlonga and the beaches. There is one smallish public beach, but I always found it was worth the splurge for the private beaches and have my own chaise lounge, umbrella, not to mention showers and a bathroom. The sea water is nice and clean there, and the right depth for swimming. The town itself is also great for walking around in, definitely worth the trip, we always go and come back in a day.
The train-bus combo from Rome is simple. I agree to splurge for the private beach club - you get an umbrella and lounge chairs as well as access to a bathroom. The beach is Sperlonga is fabulous - so much better than Ostia just outside of Rome.
