Spending the night in Fuimicino?

Is that a bad idea? We won't be getting back into Rome until 9 or10 pm....our flight leaves for home at 9 am the next morning. Is it a bad idea to just go straight to the airport and have a long night on a bench?

Our other option is staying near the Termini station, and using the Leonardo Express to get to Fuimicino in the morning, but even with the earliest train, we wouldn't get to the airport until 6:23 am....that would only give us 2.5 hours before our flight....is that cutting it too close? I know we could stay at an expensive motel, or pay big bucks for a taxi to the airport, but that's really not in our budget. Thoughts?? Thanks

I have slept on a bench at Fuimicino and it was very cold during the night but there were also a lot of people doing the same thing. FYI, last year I did take a taxi from Piazza Navona to the airport and the cost was 40 Euro

There is a regional train that leaves Roma Trastevere at 05:21 and arrives at Fiumicino at 05:48.

If you decide to spend the night at the airport, read the comments about Fiumicino at www.sleepinginairports.net.

I don't think that 2.5 hours before your flight is cutting it too close--others may have a different opinion. That's about the time I had before my flight--probably less. I took the Leonardo Express, which goes into the main terminal, and then took the shuttle over to the other terminal (#5, I think--5mins away).

I've had 2 flights out of FCO. On both of them 3 hours early check-in was barely enough. Many flights are leaving in the morning, and the line was SLOW!!

I don't know if you already have your tix, but what I do now is fly out of a regional airport to the larger airport. For example I've flown out of the tiny Perugia airport (2 flights per day) to Milan, then caught my international flight there. It isn't too costly to do this, especially if you book the 1st flight independently of the return international flight. One way to do this is get the round-trip fare and throw away the 2nd ticket.

I agree with Mike - 2 1/2 hours can be cutting it close. Those lines form very early and only get longer and slower. We arrived at 4 am for a 6:30 am flight and barely made it. Other times we arrive with 3 hours and wait at the gate for an hour. It all depends on how your nerves treat you!

Thanks everyone, for the replies...i think we'll suffer for the sake of being time safe and stay at the airport.....
