Spello as Homebase

We are 2 couples planning a month trip to Italy Spring 2018. After some time in Rome and Venice we are looking for a home base to travel Tuscan Umbrian hill towns and a trip to Cinque Terre. We have travelled to this area before and are familiar with the trains. Hoping to find a spot where a car is not a necessity, although may rent a car for a few days to access places without train station. Thinking of Spello. Thoughts, suggestions? Mille graze!

We spent two weeks in beautiful Spello, however with a car. We liked to visit the small towns such as Bevagna and Montefalco, ride through the vineyards, etc. Is there a reason you don't want a car? Spello has parking lots surrounding the town, including the very top of the town. The town offers a lot, including quite a few really excellent restaurants. We thought it was a perfect base. Read "Il Bel Centro" by Michelle Damiani to get a sense of life in Spello.
Yes, it has a train station but we didn't use it. We also visited Assisi and Perugia which I would guess have train stations. The Cinque Terre would be quite a trip from Spello.

Thank you! We are thinking of basing in Spello for 10 days to 2 weeks. We would take a few day trip to Cinque Terre. Last time in Italy we homebased in Buti, but a car was necessary for the entire time. Is there a car rental in Spello? We speak fair Italian and enjoy areas where we are not hearing English the whole time! Otherwise we would just take day trips but also enjoy vivre la vita! Karen Sortino

We spent a week in Spello one December without a car. It was fine! The station is about a 20-minute walk from the center, and there is a taxi. Buses are an option, too, and are not as far away as the station. You will definitely use your Italian in Spello!

Wonderful! We really enjoy, visiting the local markets, cooking at "home", visiting local restaurants, bars and events so Spello is sounding more and more interesting! We like to be off the beaten path a bit so we can get a taste of living local! All ideas or suggestions very appreciated!
