Specifics on reserving: Naples to Florence by train ?

I'm trying to book some advance reservations for the high speed train from Naples to Florence using Trenitalia. We'll take this after our RS Southern Italy tour.

Here is what I tried first for September 12:
from: Napoli (Tutte Le Stazioni) to: Firenze (Tutte Le Stazioni)

This comes up with:
depart: 7:30 Napoli Centrale
arrive: 10:22 Firence S. M. Novella
train: frecciarossa 9412
price: 29 Euro (super economy)

Are these the right stations to get? Am I OK waiting a few more days before booking (as my wife needs to get some medical OK before we book more non-refundables)?

Those are the correct station names. Super economy tickets go on sale 120 days prior to travel, you should be okay waiting a few days, but it's hard to know how quickly those fares will disappear. You would probably still be able to get economy fares.

Yes.
Make sure you can make the departure time.
The tickets may or may not be available in a few days, depends on demand.

Both Napoli Centrale and Florence Santa Maria Novella stations are the main ones in their respective cities. We took the opposite journey in March, actually traveling all the way down to the end of the line in Salerno.

You will have two stops, at Roma Termini & Roma Tiburtina. It doesn't look like there is a change of trains, but recheck for sure. Trenitalia can be vague at times. And 29 Euro sounds like a heck of a price, no more than $31 USD. At about 100 days out, you're still OK to wait a little while, but as soon as your wife gets the medical OK, book immediately. You never know how trains will fill at these prices during high season.

Enjoy the smooth and fast ride!

Thanks Zoe and Gerard and Jay for the replies.

Our hotel is only about 15 minutes from the train station and we'll get a taxi lined up. Hopefully the RS Tour hotel (Hotel Piazza Bellini) will serve breakfast really early and we'll just have to get cracking early.

I see availability of SuperEconomy also with later departures, if you are worried about such an early departure. There is a train or two every hour.
For later departures the SuperEconomy on the Standard class at Eur 29 are gone, but they still have plenty of availability for the Business Area at the SuperEconomy price of Eur 39.
It's 10 Euro more, but you get more room as business class has larger seats and it tends to be less crowded.

Got the tickets. Took awhile to figure out we didn't need to register on their site but if one did register then it's good to know that USA is under Stati Uniti d'America.

Thanks everyone!

The main thing you'll need to show the conductor is the hard copy of the piece of paper with the printed ticket, specifically the 'digital square' that they will scan & move on to the next seat. It may come in a separate EMail to you, Les. Also--just to be safe--print out the itinerary for the train journey as well.

Jay, I didn't get the digital square but have printed out the email sent to us plus the receipt with various numbers they might require. Hopefully that's enough.

Les, now that you are registered with Trenitalia, go back to the site to retrieve your ticket and print it out - it will have the digital square. You will need the 6-digit alpha-numeric code to get the ticket.

Or check your spam mail, it may be there.

Zoe, I did not register as there was an option to not register.

The email "Order Confirm" message has a Ticket Code (9 digits). The email says "If you have chosen the ticketless option with email payment receipt, the personnel will only check for your presence on board". We have reserved seats too. So hopefully with these printed out docs, our ID's, and those seats we will pass inspection.

Les--

Not to belabor the point, but I just looked back on my own Trenitalia EMails from our trip a couple months ago.

When I made advance Trenitalia reservations last December for March 2015 travel, I did not register either. When your reservation was confirmed, you should have received an EMail with the subject line 'Your Trenitalia Ticket', containing the info including the booking code (PNR), which is the six-digit code that Zoe described, and I assume that is what you printed out, which is fine. But...there should be a .pdf attachment on that EMail as well, with your name as the file name. Print that out & take it with you, because that is the actual ticket, which includes the seat information, barcode, and digital square.

You can probably get by with what you have, but why take the chance? I was in true fail-safe (anal-retentive?) mode on our trip--I scanned all my hard copies for travel & lodging, and downloaded them as files to my iPhone, so even if I didn't have WiFi access, if I lost all my papers I could show the guy the .pdf files, and I'd zoom it in on the digital square. In fact, on the trip I saw many travelers doing exactly that--showing their phones to the conductor.

About your early departure from the hotel. Ask the day before, many hotels will accommodate you with a packed breakfast that you can eat on the train. There should be a diner car where you can get hot and cold drinks. You can eat there (not usually comfortable) or back at your seats.

Jay, thanks again. I would never have noticed that attachment.

Chani, wil ask about a packed breakfast if we cannot make the actual one. Thanks.

On freccia-something high speed trains the actual ticket is the PNR code. You could memorize it or write it on the back of your hand and the conductor wouldn't bat an eye. You'll see that many Italians with "old style" mobile phones still get it as a text message.

It's explained here: www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en/Purchase/The-Trenitalia-electronic-ticket

On regional trains the PDF attachment must be printed or shown on the screen of a tablet/smartphone/PC so that the conductor can scan the square code.
