special winter activities with kids in December

We will be in Italy 10-19 December with 2 kids (4&7). I'm looking for ideas for special winter or Christmas events - unique stuff that you can't do in the regular season. We will be traveling from Germany to Rome, so they can't be too far out of these areas. Any guidebook suggestions? Most are not so helpful for off season travel. Thanks!

In Rome check out the Christmas Market at Piazza Navona. As I recall there were a lot of vendors selling toys and things that kids would enjoy. I also saw several people demonstrating the things they were selling (those lit up spinning wheels that you throw up in the air...see them a lot at Disney World, not sure exactly what they are called).

They also set up a life-sized nativity scene in St. Peter's Square. I'm not sure exactly when it is unveiled. They were setting it up the first week in December, but probably it will be viewable during the time you are there.

Around the 5th or so of December, you will start seeing Christmas trees and lights going up, especially around the churches and there was a very tall tree set up next to the Colosseum.

Lastly, keep your eyes open for any random surprises. I saw Santa Claus walking his dog out in Florence.

Bolzano is famous for its Christmas markets, people come from all over Italy to see it. While the area doesn't feel very Italian, you feel more like you are in Austria than Italy, it is a beautiful town and the Christmas market is worth doing.
