Special Occasion Restaurant in Rome

I'll be in Rome in late October, and this corresponds to my husbands birthday and is close to our anniversary. So we are looking for a special restaurant. Usually we stick to nice but fairly casual, moderate places when traveling. This time we want something a little fancier.

Can be fairly expensive if it's worth it (Michelin stars not out of the question, but not necessary!). Excellent atmosphere and food obviously. Italian food, please (not going to Rome to splurge on sushi or something). Can be traditional or more modern. We are late 30s and adventurous eaters.

Any and all suggestions welcome!

My husband and I did a 10 year anniversary trip a few years ago, same age, and we hit a couple of Michelin starred places and a few highly recommended ones. I haven't had luck in Rome with the Michelin starred restaurants like other cities. We went to Il Convivio and another whose name completely escapes me and I can't find anywhere so maybe it's gone by now. Best dinner hands down after several days in Rome and several around Tuscany was The Library. Incredibly romantic and not over the top expensive. It isn't cheap but was way worth the euros. It's not unknown so make reservations! Splurge on a bottle of Brunello if you are wine drinkers. Im at a loss of truffle seasons but I think you are there during one. Also totally worth the splurge.

As another idea, rooftop bars are a great way to celebrate an evening. Two I love is the top of the Hotel Forum and The FortySeven. The Forum has old school American style cocktails overlooking the Forum. The FortySeven is more Italian with a view of the republican era temples near the Tiber. Both winners. Neither cheap but worth it for the experience to me.

Mira,
I highly recommend La Pentoloccia on VIA Flavia. Check it out their website. It was on R S list and we have been there several times. Every thing is wonderful; food, atmosphere, service and not off the chart expensive. I'd love to see your comments after your visit.

Mira,

The ambiance on a major Piazza like Piazza Navona can't be beat the food is usually mediocre and prices very high. If it's ambiance you're looking for, it might be worth it, otherwise, maybe not. However, right around the corner from Piazza Navona (if you're staying in that area), is a restaurant by the name of il Cantuccioal Senato. It's at
Corso del Rinascimento, 71, 00186 Roma, Italy. The dinning room is table-cloth service and the wait-staff was very attentive. Best of all, the food was outstanding and the price was at least 25% less than the places on the piazza.

By the way, October usually sees a second artichoke harvest and il Cantuccioal Senato served both simmered and fried artichokes. Very good!
