Trenitalia.com is showing a travel time of 1 day & 15 hours from Tarragona to Venice. That's a looong time to spend on a train. I'd fly from Barcelona to Venice via Vueling.com - the rates are low as long as you abide by the luggage restrictions.
Thanks Samsn,
Maybe, we could make a stop half way to cut the trip. Do you know the route it takes? I still prefer the train as you get to see so much more along the way. We are in no hurry.
Cheers,

Sheroll...your best bet to check European rail schedules is the German national rail network. Go to bahn.de, click on English in the upper right corner, then enter your departure and destination points (they spell Venice as Venise.) You'll find three trains, all involving overnights, but only one with good sleeping accommodations (one other requires two train changes in the middle of the night). The third requires a long wait for a train change in the middle of the night. Click on "details for all" and the major stops and services will come up. If you want further details, click on "show intermediate stops" at the bottom of each route, and they too will pop up.
Sheroll, I was just looking at Salou to Venice for another poster under the Transporation tab. I see the same 3 trains that Norm sees. The trips take 20.0hrs-31.0hrs depending on which run you choose. Two of the three runs go through France and Switzerland.
I also agree with SamSn on the Vueling flight. I see a 2hr. flight from Barcelona that has a starting cost of 50Euro depending on which day you fly and the size and weight of your luggage. All three train runs above run through the night so you won't see anything during the dark hours. I would suggest opting for spending more time in Venice.
Thank you ever so much, You've all been such great help. Will check flights now if all trains run at night.
Cheers,
Sheroll
If you have the time and want to stop there are many interesting places enroute. There's Catalonia, French Catalonia, and Provence; you might also stop any any number of cities in Italy.
These are great destinations with lots to see and do. I don't think it would be worth just stopping for a few hours or overnight, though.
with all your help, I have booked our flights to venice. Any suggestions for quality accommodation there and Rome please!
Cheers
