Southern Italy for 7 days

We’re going to be in Southern Italy for 7 daysin September. We’re thinking of staying in Sorrento and want to take a few days to see Amalfi, Capri, and Pompeii. Also considering to stay in Positano as an alternative. We want a convenient location but a quiet place to stay.

We went to Rome last year and really enjoyed being able to walk everywhere. We’d like to repeat that type of vacation this year! Suggestions?

Two years ago friends picked us up at the Rome airport (Naples would be even easier) and we drove straight to Pompeii for one night so we could enter Pompeii early in the morning. We stayed until around 2:00 pm and then drove to Positano (our friend wanted to drive, we would have used public transportation). We liked staying in Positano to be right on the AC for easy access to Amalfi, Ravello, and Capri by ferry, although many do like Sorrento. We spent four nights in a quiet apartment on the upper road in Positano. There were a lot of steps down to the lower town, but we are in our 60s and did okay on the hills. After that we had two nights in Naples, which allowed us to tour the Archaeology Museum, which is a great tie-in to the Pompeii visit. It's a great trip, but very different than the week in Rome, as you will need to use buses or the ferries (be sure the ferries will still be running) to get around. Once in any of the towns, you can walk everywhere.

We’d been on Sicily with a rental car, crossed to the Italian mainland on the car ferry, and drove up to Sorrento. We actually stayed in Piano di Sorrento, right next door. It afforded an easy place to park, and dining spots, Sorrento and the ferry to Capri were within quick and easy walking distance, as was a close train station for visiting Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other sights. We could also drive the Amalfi coast easily from there, or drive to Pompeii and other sights. Our place was next to a park, so the neighborhood was tranquil, but still had conveniences.
