We have visited Italy a few times but have never gotten very far South - I am looking at going in November (no choice on that) and would like to fly into a Southern City (not Rome - South of that) and spend 5 days or so. Have thought about Sicily - but just want something beautiful, cultural and relaxing with decent places to stay. Any suggestions? Cities to fly into (I will be flying from Bulgaria). Train - car rental?
Cities to visit and stay in? thanks!
From Sofia the only non stop choice is Rome with Alitalia or AirBulgaria (both Sky Team partners). WizzAir, a low cost, also flies to Rome. If you choose the Naples area, as suggested by Chani, you might as well take a train down from Rome. Less than 2 hours and you are in Naples. Or you could proceed with Alitalia to Naples for the 30 min flight. Check the flight times, since by train might be faster as there are only 3 daily flights from Rome to NAP. If you opt for Sicily, the warmest spot in Italy in November, with plenty of history and things to see, then you should fly to either Catania or Palermo (via Rome with Alitalia). In that case you would purchase a ticket from Sofia to CTA or PMO with Alitalia (or code share AirBulgaria) then change planes in Rome and proceed to Sicily with Alitalia. No car needed for the Naples area. A car is better for visiting Sicily. If you have less than a week, Maybe Naples is a better choice. Sicily needs at least 10 days to visit everything. It's a huge island with lots to see:

Heather, There are a number of choices you could consider, depending on the type of holiday you're looking for. Especially in November, you're probably going to have trouble finding direct flights from Bulgaria, so you'll probably have to first fly to a larger hub. A few possibilities...... > Naples - this is a good location for accessing the Amalfi Coast, as you can take a Bus from the airport to Sorrento and then tour other areas, as mentioned in the previous reply. This would likely be the easiest choice. There are lots of interesting sites to see in that area - Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum and the various towns such as Positano, Amalfi, Ravello or the isle of Capri. At that time of year, the towns will likely be somewhat "quiet". > Sicily - that's also a good choice as there's LOTS of history and lots to see. I'd suggest flying into Palermo although which city to start in will depend on what you want to see there and best flight availability. > Calabria - if you'd rather explore an area that's not as visited by tourists and IF you can find a flight to Lamezia Terme at that time of year, that's also a possibility (some of the flights there are seasonal). You'd probably need a car rental and you'll have to use Lonely Planet, DK Guides or one of the "other" Guidebooks to find information on things to see there. Happy travels!
I was in Sorrento in February last year and loved it. Easy by train to visit Pompeii, and by bus to Ravello and Positano. I'm guessing Naples is the best place to fly to - then take the local Circumvesuviani train or maybe the ferry. This is one of the places where off-season prices are much lower than high season, so nice rooms are quite affordable.
Thanks everyone. Very helpful. As much as I want to do Sicily I think I'll wait until I have more time. I'm looking at just hanging out in Ravello. Seems nice and quiet and beautiful with some hiking. We have been to Ischia. And Pompeii. But didn't get to experience the A. Coast at all. Something we had wanted to do. Any other tips appreciated. I'm also going to look into the less traveled places mentioned. But
With limited time might need to stick to something closer to Naples. Thanks again!!!
