Southern Italy / Almalfi Coast

I'm just getting started with planning on a trip to Southern Italy / Almalfi coast. There will be two couples, no kids.

Travel dates: September 2024. We're flexible, but tentative travel dates were to leave on a Friday and return on a Monday - 9/13/24 to 9/23/24. Two travel days, 9 vacation days.

We've both been to Italy and done Florence, Tuscany and Cinque Terre. We're looking for a good mix of site seeing, exploring and relaxing.

We're ok moving around a few times in terms of lodging.

Looking for recommendations on cities we can't miss. An itinerary recommendation. Any tour guide company/ tour person specifically /tours in general recommendation. Would it be worth getting out to one of the islands. Lodging recommendations that someone loved.

I would love to have this all mapped out and do it somewhat by ourselves vs. traveling with a tour guide crew.

Thanks for any recommendations and taking the time help!

We enjoyed staying in Sorrento as a base for a few days and did day trips to Capri one day and Pompeii another day. We love the Bellevue Syrene Hotel on the cliffs in Sorrento. There are other great hotels also in the Villa Communale area of Sorrento which is near the lift that takes you down to the harbor. The sunsets over the Mediterranean are gorgeous!

We also stayed in Positano at Hotel Eden Roc for a few days and from there we took the boat to Amalfi and then the City Sightseeing bus from Amalfi to Ravello as a day trip. We ended our trip in Naples for a night and flew home from Naples.
The Amalfi coast has spectacular scenery and was one of our favorite trips.

Try to fly in/out of Naples if you can- it will save you so much travel time!
You could stay in Sorrento the night before your departure flight if your flight is not too early or Salerno- direct train to Naples. Otherwise you will need to spend night before departure flight in your departure city.

We spent 9 days in the area a few years ago
Sorrento 4- visited Pompeii and Capri using Mondo Guides www.sharedtours.com. Both were fantastic days
Amalfi/Ravello 2/1 - visited Positano for a few short hours by ferry/bus.
Salerno 2 by ferry- visited Paestum. Enjoyed Salerno very much.

Sorrento Hotel Grand de la Ville- the views!!

This topic comes up a lot. Forum searches will turn up lots of info on tours, transportation, where to stay , etc.

We were just in Sorrento/ Amalfi Coast this past May, and were actually disappointed in the area, to be honest. The lack of infrastructure and the resulting congestion resulted in no efficient or quick way to get anywhere, whether using public or private transportation. Things just don't work well, and northern Italy shines in a comparison.
We found the regional trains ( Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento) in Southern Italy to be erratic, SRO, and without air conditioning. The trains were kind of on time in the mornings, but ran later as the day progressed. We used a private driver on the Amalfi Coast day trip, but still sat in congestion on the roads. And- the crowds, even in May, which from reports, are repeated in the fall. Shoulder season isn't much different than high season, crowd-wise. Positano was packed with tourists shopping in the same high- end stores that are everywhere. Amalfi town was shoulder-shoulder people on the main drag- and again, this was May.
Perhaps if we were better versed in the realities on the ground we wouldn't have been so disappointed. We had just left the calm and beauty of Lake Como, and wish we had stayed. We are seasoned travelers, but missed these very important details. I'm afraid the area has become a victim of its Instagram success.

In reading reviews after our trip, I think recommendations to train and stay in Salerno would have been an improvement. Then perhaps ferry to Sorrento? However, the ferries are very weather- dependent.
Also, if the weather is bad, which it was for some of our trip, there aren't many indoor options for entertainment.

I'm glad we went, especially to Pompeii , but I have no need to return to Southern Italy. I'm wishing you a better experience. There is a wealth of info posted here on the Forum, as visiting Sorrento/ Amalfi Coast is a weekly topic. Safe travels!

Pat - thank you so much for your review and recommendations. After reading your review and connecting with friends who had similar experiences we decided to do Southern France in the Fall.

Never been, but we've been planning our upcoming, month-long Sicily-Puglia-Cilento-Naples trip for months with help from this forum (and more). Here's an alternative book to RS for you to check out, with a focus on Naples, Amalfi Coast, islands near to Naples, Salerno and the Cilento, just a little further to the south. https://media.lonelyplanet.com/shop/pdfs/naples-pompeii-the-amalfi-coast-6-preview.pdf

The Lonely Planet book does not include Puglia or Calabria, but Lonely Planet reveals lots to explore in the area where you are focusing your attention. You don't really have the time to explore further south, anyway.

FWIW, here are a couple of posts I put up relatively recently and the responses that I received, which may help you.

We are planning this portion of our trip without guides other than for Pompeii - for which Gaetano and Askos are the two that appeal most to me, but others on this forum have other names to suggest, as well. To the extent that you are looking for a regional guide, that is not something that I have planned for our Cilento/Naples/probably Ischia segment.
