oklahoma,

That's some thing you'd probably have to arrange yourself, travelling by local buses or rental car and only visiting remote villages (where little or no English may be spoken). The logical conclusion would seem to be that if there are tours operating in a particular area, there will be other tourists. Calabria still has many areas that aren't visited too often by tourists, but there will still probably be a few other adventurous individuals. You might have a look at THIS website to see whether that might be along the lines of what you're looking for.

Have you looked at the South Italy tour? It's excellent and does visit a few out-of-the-way places that seem to have fewer tourists than other places (ie: Vieste, Matera), but that seems to vary with the time-of-year. As I recall, our group also visited the small town of Celano (just for a few hours) and there were no other tourists at the time so our tour was of great interest to the local residents.

Happy travels!
