Southern Italy

Hi - We (4 adults) are traveling in Italy from the Amalfi Coast to the Hill Country (around Montepulciano) then to Florence, . We have 3 days & 2 nights between the Amalfi Coast & the Hill Country . Should we continue south to Matera & Alberobello - the Trulli District? Is it worth it? How long is the drive & are there stops we shouldn't miss on the way? Also, is there a great place to stay in between (nothing mentioned in the tour books)? Thanks, Gail

You could spend the time in Matera and Alberobello if you have a car, otherwise getting to Matera can be an adventure in scheduling but worth the trouble. The trulli district in Alberobello is somewhat overrated, but with a car you can see a lot of trulli along the way. One stop to consider (again, with a car) is Castel del Monte (be sure to try the local wine), the castle built in the middle of nowhere.

Lonely Planet, Michelin and other guidebooks cover these areas, RS does not.
