We have been to Italy twice, but never as south as Rome.
This time we plan to land in Rome, stay in a friend's apt., but then what?
These are my ideas and I'd welcome any ideas!
Rent an airbnb in Sorrento, and take trips to Naples, Capri & Amalfi. Where else is good to go?!
Or, should we find places to stay in those towns?! Any suggestions of places you've stayed?
We've stayed in airbnb's in Provence, and loved it, but maybe Southern Italy is different? Not big on luxury hotels!
From Sorrento you can do Naples, Capri and Amalfi as day trips. and if you are into history and archeology then Pompei is on the way to Naples (from Sorrento). You will love Sorrento.
There is so much to see and do in the Campania region (that's where Naples and surroundings is) that you can rent an apartment for months before you can see everything:

From Sorrento ...
1 Capri
2 Pompeii & Herculaneum
3 Positano-Amalfi-Ravello
4 Naples
The Belvedere Terrace at Palazzo Avino in Ravello is breathtaking. http://www.palazzoavino.com/en/Dining/Terrazza-Belvedere
How long do you have? Do you want to drive? Matera and the surrounding area, as well as Puglia are beautiful.
