My husband and I will be in Italy at the end of June for 10 days (on the ground). We plan on flying in and out of Rome, where we will meet up w/ our son. The only "have to", is a trip to the little town of Fuscaldo, in the Calabria region. This is where my husband's family is from. My thoughts are: 3-4 days in Rome; 5 days in the Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi area - w/ a day trip to Fuscaldo; 1-2 days back in Rome. My questions: - Can this be done w/out a car? - Has anyone ever been to Fuscaldo? - Suggestions for where to stay in the Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi area?
- Any and all tips & suggestions greatly appreciated!
a couple of suggestions.... Put all the Rome time in one block makes travelling easier. So on arrival immediately go to the coast say Amalfi then put your Rome time at the end of the trip. I would strongly encourage you to spend at least one night in Fuscaldo. It's hard to describe the feeling of wandering around in your ancestors home town, don't short change it. I think you should be able to do all this on public transport. Fuscaldo has a train station. Looks like you could leave Fuscaldo around 12:30 and be in Rome by 18:30. I'll leave the logisitcs of getting from FCO to the Amalfi coast to some one better versed.
IMHO, a day trip is almost impossible because it could take you most of the day to get there. A train would be faster, but you must go somewhere to take the train. Imagine going from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia and back in one day. We usually spend a week in Nicastro, Calabria every summer and we now drive or fly. My family comes from this region, as well. There is an international airport in Lamezia Terme with connections from Roma. You could fly into FCO and take a second oneway flight to Lamezia then rent a car. After a few days you could drive north and drop-off the car. Keep in mind that once you are in Fuscaldo you may want to see more of the region. Buon viaggio,
Dear Cathy Calabria is at least 6h drive from Rome... I would suggest you train since highway from Salerno to Reggio Calabria is non existing. For the hotels - just Google it and you will find many nice places.
Per viamichelin.com, Salerno to Fuscaldo is a 3 1/2 hour drive. From Naples, add another 45 minutes. Reggio di Calabria is a 6-hour drive, but Cathy doesn't have to go to Reggio. Still mighty long for a day trip, unless you hit the road very early and don't mind getting back late.
