I have found lots of cities and small villages to visit north of Pompei, however I do not recognize any names of places south of Pompei on the mainland. Any suggestions of places and or things to see.
We have 6 weeks in Italy so should have time to see a lot of things.
Linda, It would help if you could provide a bit more information. Which names in the area "south of Pompeii" have you looked at? What method will you be using to get around that area? You might enjoy a visit to Matera & The Sassi (where the movie "The Passion of the Christ" was filmed). A stay in This Hotel will be a unique experience! You might also consider a short visit to see the Trulli houses in Alberobello and of course Paestum. Cheers!
Take a look at the coastal area of Maratea, on the coast south of Paestum. They bill themselves as Italy's last undiscovered secret. A terrific place to stay (and eat) is the Villa Cheta. The photo gallery on the hotel's website will give you an idea about the area. http://www.villacheta.it/en/index.htm
The Amalfi Coast, of course, is south of Pompeii.
Sorrento, Capri, Positano...
