Any suggestions for small towns to relax in South of Naples reachable by train?
We enjoyed Paestum. Very pleasant town to wander around.
Salerno has a very nice historic center, but Salerno is probably larger than what you're looking for.
Thanks for the suggestions. We are leaning toward Salerno.
do not expect a small town when you get to Salerno.
I was mistaken, we are actually thinking of Sorrento, not Salerno.
Thanks everyone. Because of my physical limitations, I think we will stay in Naples and Sorrento and take day trips to Herculenium and perhaps Paestum. Mostly we will just enjoy the views, the coffee and the food.
Paestum from Sorrento will be difficult but it is manageable from Naples. In fact getting to Paestum from Sorrento would probably involve back tracking to Naples.
The Paestum site is a ways from the train station but it is completely flat. The site itself has a good, flat, level path all around the park. If you have mobility concerns you obviously won't wandering off into unkempt areas but the path passes right by the main temples and through the various site highlights. The newly reopened museum is accessible as well.

Definitely Sorrento! The train from Naples to Sorrento is quick and easy. Sorrento offers plenty of restaurant options, walks and hikes, and shopping all with a small town vibe. Taking a day trip to Capri is a must.
If you really want to enjoy the Amalfi Coast, take a bus from Sorrento to either Positano or Amalfi town. We stayed in Amalfi for three nights at the Hotel Residence and enjoyed walks and hikes from there. It's small, quaint and quiet in Amalfi and we loved it!
Thanks, I think Sorrento will be our choice as a base.
