South Italy Tour Sept 15 - Weather?

If anyone has gone on the South Italy tour in September
of last year can you tell me what the weather was like.
We'er so tropical here that i'm not sure what to pack.
Also, we will be landing in Rome -is it easy to get on the express train? Thanks.

beautiful :-) (usually!)

September is a wonderful month - it is usually warm during the day and chilly at night (even in Aug. I have been known to wear a light sweater or jacket...even in Aug.!)similar to so. CA temps. I would just bring layers...short sleeves with something long-sleeved to through on in the evening if it's chilly (you didn't say where in So. Italy you are heading though - can make a difference. for instance, it is often much hotter in Rome than in Naples)

What express train? where are you heading out to? (if you mean the "Leonardo express" out of the airport...yes. very simple. follow the signs, buy a ticket from the machine (in English even) and get one - they run about every 30min.

Ramona, we were in southern Italy last year from September 22 thru October 6, and the weather could not have been better...low 80s and clear skies virtually the entire time. We did Rome, Positano, and Sicily, and loved them all. We traveled on our own, but encountered a Rick Steves tour group in our cozy hotel in the old section of Cefalu in Sicily. Sicily was great. I'm sure you'll love it.

That's probably the best time of the year to visit southern Italy. Be prepared for fairly warm days and the potential for a little cooling off at night.

As for your second question, do you mean the express train into Rome proper? It's very easy. Ask anyone at the airport.

Ramona,

I was on the South Italy tour in May, and the weather was great! I've been in the north of Italy in September and it was also hot and sunny. Of course when speaking about the weather, there are never any guarantees. If you use a "layering" approach with your clothing, you should be prepared for anything (I pack a Rain Poncho though, just to be "on the safe side" - I use Rick's model in the travel store, but haven't had to use it yet).

The Leonardo Express from Rome/Fiumicino to Roma Termini is the easiest way to get into the city from the airport. As I recall, it's a 30-40 minute trip at a cost of €11 per person (I usually take a small amount of local currency for things like that, but I believe you can use credit cards to purchase the tickets). It's a bit of a walk from the passport control area to the trains, but nothing too strenuous.

As you'll be on the South Italy tour, you'll probably be staying in the Trastevere area of Rome. Your tour package will have all the details on the best methods to travel from Termini to Trastevere (I used a Taxi - I was tired after the flight and wasn't in the mood to use other options - you won't have any trouble finding a Taxi outside the main entrance - most of them seem to be using GPS units these days, so you can watch your progress as you drive through Rome).

Buon Viaggio!
