South Italy and Sicily in Sept & October - Clothes Options

My wife and I are on Rick Steves tours through South Italy and Sicily late September into October with a stopover in Capri. Are men's shorts an acceptable option, particularly when touring the ruins and sites of geological interest?

Cargo shorts or other types - like jean or khaki shorts from the GAP for instance - are a common sight and completely acceptable. Make sure you don't wander off in some churches in them though, as a few of them may have clothing restrictions for visitors.
