south italy

we have about a week to travel around Amalfi coast and naples region with emphasis on 'cultural' sites, also want to travel to Matera. Having trouble figuring out the logistics of getting around. We will use public transport. Any ideas welcome!

You can do Naples and the Amalfi coast on public transportation (see Rick's book for details). In 2009, I had a lengthy conversation with someone on this site about how to get to Matera on public transport. It's not easy, unfortunately, because Matera is certainly worth visiting. If you want to review the options I mentioned, type Matera Janet into this site's search engine.

sidney, This is the information I posted on a previous Thread on the best way to get to Matera. I haven't re-checked that the information is still valid, but I'm assuming it is. "Matera is not served by a direct rail line from Rome. The method I'd probably use would be the EuroStar Italia / Alta Velocita from Roma Termini to Bari (Time about 4H, Fare about €57 PP second class one way). In Bari you'll need to transfer to the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane which is a private rail network. I believe the station is in a different (but nearby) station building. Travel time about 1H. I believe there are also Buses from Rome to Matera." Happy travels!
